College Planning Calendar
A COLLEGE PLANNING CALENDAR
Use this calendar to keep track of everything you need to do for college admissions.

FRESHMAN YEAR
Meet with counselor and complete four year plan.


SOPHOMORE YEAR
OCTOBER - Take the Preliminary Assessment College Testing (PLAN) and the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT).


JUNIOR YEAR
SEPTEMBER - Review your high school plan, transcripts, and activities. Attend college fairs. Talk with recruiters and collect college brochures. Prepare for the PSAT.
OCTOBER - Take PSAT.
NOVEMBER - Begin to plan senior-year high school curriculum and set up informal campus visits for spring.
DECEMBER - Review PSAT results with high school counselor.
JANUARY - Narrow choices to between 10-12 schools: write for catalogs and applications. Begin preparations for Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) Reasoning and SAT Subject conducted in April, May and June.
MARCH - Early decision candidates must take the SAT Reasoning or ACT and SAT Subject before June.
APRIL - Take the ACT or SAT Reasoning. Visit college campuses. If possible, visit classes and check on social life; talk with students about academic atmosphere, facilities and, if necessary, opportunities for part-time work.
MAY - Take SAT Subject if going to University of California.
SUMMER
Early decision candidates should schedule formal interviews, where required. Others should cultivate hobbies and non-scholastic interests (politics, volunteer work) to broaden extracurricular profile.


SENIOR YEAR
SEPTEMBER - Enroll in top-level courses, including advanced placement, if possible. Work on applications and outline essay topics. Line up recommendations from teachers and former employers. Resume SAT or ACT preparations. Sign up for SAT Reasoning or ACT.
OCTOBER - Complete campus visits. Students should give three weeks notice to recommendation sources and prepare letter. Last date to take SAT, ACT, or SAT Subject for CSU or UC is first Saturday in December. Mail-in registration deadline is October. Take ACT or SAT Reasoning again, if needed.
OCTOBER 1 - Complete University of California Admission Application on line at www.ucop.edu/pathways and
NOVEMBER 30 California State University Admission Application on line at www.csumentor.edu. Complete revisions of essay and personal statement drafts for applications. Latecomers to the admissions process should prepare and register for January SAT Reasoning or ACT.
DECEMBER - Early-decision candidates should prepare thank you notes for recommendation sources. Last chance to take SAT Reasoning or ACT and SAT Subject for fall freshman class candidates.
JANUARY - Begin filling out Financial Aid Application (FAFSA).
FEBRUARY - Late college applications, essay and recommendations should be ready for mailing. Others should consider adding subsequent test scores, if significantly higher, to application folders.
MARCH - Deadline for mailing FAFSA. At the beginning of March, the school files GPA verification on-line for students and sends it to the California Student Aid Commission.
APRIL - Successful candidates are notified, must decide which school to attend. Wait list is compiled for backup candidates to fill unclaimed slots. Complete application for our local Fontana Scholarships. Register for Community College classes. Bring college acceptance letters to Guidance Office so pictures and colleges of acceptance can be included on the College Wall of
